Callie + Chase were married at the beautiful Polo Barn at Saxony in a mix of navy and gray. The simple but elegant wedding was so refreshing to see in a sea of over the top soiree’s and we are so excited to share their images with you. Not only that, but the beautiful bride was kind enough to give us a little behind the scenes of their big day.  Make sure to read the part she wrote about her wedding shoes. Genius if you ask us! {enjoy}

How did you and your spouse meet?

Chase and I were introduced through a mutual friend, Brittany.  Brittany and Chase grew up across the street from each other and were friends throughout high school but still kept in touch after they both moved away.  I met Brittany in college at the University of Kentucky and she became one of my closest friends.  A few years after college, I started travel nursing and took a 3 month (or so it was supposed to be) assignment in Atlanta, GA where Chase had been living since finishing college.  Brittany casually introduced us via group text on the premise of if my car broke down and I needed a flat tire changed, Chase would be that guy.  Chase invited me to a party with his friends and the rest was history.  Ironically, Brittany was the friend who had vowed to never try and set up me up on a blind date yet inadvertently ended up doing so with the guy I’d marry.  That 3 month contract in Atlanta continued to be extended, and we’re now 4 years from then, still in Atlanta together!

Describe your bridal attire. (gown, accessories, hair/makeup-overall look) :

I’m a fairly simple person so I wanted to have a classic look for my wedding day.  When I started looking at gowns, I knew I wanted all lace, nothing flashy or shiny on it.  I loved that it was overall simple, but had so many details if you looked close up.  Because my dress was somewhat plain, I used my accessories and hair piece to add just a little shine.  The back of my dress dipped slightly so I wanted side swept hair to let that show.   When everything came together, I felt beautiful but most importantly, still felt like myself.  It was the simple yet romantic look I always wanted!

What inspired the wedding day outfits?

For me, I knew she wanted a lace dress.  I was not looking at all for strapless but totally changed my mind when I tried it on.  For both the bridesmaids and groomsmen, it was most important to us we chose outfits that could be worn again.  People always say that, but we really wanted it to be true!  Chase chose a suit he was comfortable in and I chose a dress I would love to steal/borrow from my sister (maid-of-honor) after the wedding.  We wanted neutrals that worked well in the fall, which was the reason for navy and gray.

 Shoes:

Just some old Steve Madden nude pumps I’ve had for years.  As much as I knew I’d be walking in heels outside on grass, I wanted my most trusted pair of shoes I knew I could walk for miles in. 🙂

FIRST LOOK

Did you do a First Look before the ceremony? If you did or if you didn’t have your groom see you in your dress before your ceremony, what influenced that decision and how do you feel about it now that the wedding is over?

We did do a first look and we’re SO glad we did.  We originally had planned not to because of tradition, but after reading a FANTASTIC article supplied by our photographers that laid out the pros and cons, we changed our minds.  Chase and I had a private meeting a few hours before the ceremony.  This was time I am really thankful for, as it was one of the only moments I had alone with him all day.  It was so fun to talk with him, see what he thought of my dress, find out how he was feeling, etc – all things I wouldn’t have been able to do if the first time he’d seen me was at the altar.  I was never particularly nervous on my wedding day, and I think seeing Chase had a lot to do with this.  He’s the person who keeps me calm, so for any nervous brides I think a first look is so helpful!  Logistically, it was also great.  Meeting early gave us an opportunity to do bridal party pictures before the ceremony making the evening easier for all our guests, bridal party, and us.  Because of this, we had tons more time to visit with guests, eat dinner, and enjoy our reception!

Favorite reception memory:

Two of our friends, Jimmy and Brandon, are excellent musicians and used to play the local bars while in college with Callie at the University of Kentucky.  Although we had a band and DJ hired for the reception, they were both so great and let Jimmy and Brandon made an impromptu appearance for 30 minutes or so while they took a break.  It was not only a huge hit for me (Callie) and my college friends to relive our college days together, but also a big crowd pleaser for everyone else!

What was the best piece of wedding advice you got?

“Always remember you’re on the same team.”  That sounded really obvious to me at first but I’ve often thought of it since being married.  We all have the tendency to get selfish sometimes and that’s been a good reminder to me.

What piece of wedding planning advice do you wish you followed?

Start early – I did a lot of the big things early but put off small details until the end and that got a bit stressful.  Life doesn’t stop because you’re planning your wedding.

Anything you wish you hadn’t worried about?

The small things – ex) Did I pick the right color chairs to go with the tables/runners?  The chairs were filled with people and that’s all that mattered.  No one remembered those tiny things I sweat about!

Anything you wish you had known about sooner rather than later?

How important it is to delegate.  Also, how happy your family and friends are to help.  I felt like I was putting people out asking for help but our friends and family told us time and time again how much they actually enjoyed being included that way.

From our bride:  Although we both live in Atlanta now, it was clear from the beginning of the wedding planning process that I would return to my home town, Lexington, Kentucky. Since Lexington is the Horse and Bourbon Capital of the world we wanted to incorporate what makes Kentucky special into our wedding day.

The attention to detail was amazing and the day was nothing short of perfection. Guests arrived in Kentucky by planes, trains and automobiles. The Bluegrass wedding weekend began with the rehearsal dinner hosted by the groom’s parents at the Woodford Reserve Distillery, where guests were treated to a special tour of the distillery including the stills, barrel warehouse and bottling lines. In the tasting room, the Woodford Reserve Bourbon was flowing, a fireplace with copper detail provided the ambience, while the guest tables were crafted using reclaimed wood from a barn on the Distillery property. Dinner was provided by the celebrity Chef-In-Residence Ouita Michel.

Our wedding invitations were Print at home gold champagne bubble invites that  were customized by the bride and her mother with navy envelopes lined with Pink and gold chevron fine paper from PaperSource for a modern look with dramatic impact. The invitations were hand-addressed with gold calligraphy by my mother

We chose to do a first look at the Mansion at Griffin Gate and it helped to take some of the nerves away. The beautiful wedding images were captured by Christine Cornwell Photography. Shortly after the first look, my father picked me up in a vintage 1950 Silver Rolls Royce for the trip to St. Peter’s Catholic Church. The aisle was lined with pink and white rose pew arrangements, alternating with large white and gold lanterns with candles glowing. The Carnegie Quartet provided classical music during the Catholic ceremony presided over by Fr. Norman Fischer. We made our getaway through a sea of bubbles. The whole ceremony was beautiful, dream-like and enchanting.

The bridesmaids attire included a light pink halter top gown with accordion pleats, coordinating pink onyx earrings and bracelets. The bridesmaid bouquets were made of pink roses and white hydrangeas. The finishing touch to each bouquet was a wide ivory grosgrain ribbon embroidered with each bridesmaid’s monogrammed initials in navy. Three flower girls wore floor length tulle gowns complimented by a navy sash embroidered with their initials in light pink. The flower girls wore flower crowns full of white roses.

My all lace Allure Couture gown complimented the glittery Kate Spade heels and matching clutch. I customized the gown by wearing a lace jacket for the church ceremony, changing to  lace straps with a keyhole back for the reception entrance and wearing the gown strapless for the later hours of the reception. It was unique, in that everyone thought I wore THREE different gowns, but all I did was change the top! My wedding day hair and makeup was by Pink LOU LOU. The bridal bouquet was created by Doug Smith Design and Events and incorporated pink and white heirloom roses. My late brother’s navy tie was wrapped around the bouquet to keep him close to me during the ceremony. I also carried an heirloom linen handkerchief which has been carried by every bride in my mother’s family for the last 125 years. My veil was also a special family treasure, originally handmade and beaded by my late grandmother and worn by my mother on her wedding day 32 years earlier.

My groom chose navy blue suits with brown Cole Haan leather loafers for himself and his groomsmen. Pink gingham bowties and pocket squares added a touch of summer- breezy fun. These were definitely stylish, whimsical and classy at the same time. Oh, let’s not forget about those red, blue, and white K-bell socks! The two ring bearers wore complimentary navy blue suits and pink gingham bowties, with one carrying an ivory pillow with gold sequin monogrammed initials of the bride and the other carrying an ivory pillow with gold sequin Monogrammed initials of the groom. The pillows were a unique touch to the traditional ring bearers pillow and were sourced from Etsy. The wedding rings were definitely a symbol of the joining of two individuals and two families into one. The main stone in the bridal engagement ring was a 100 year old European cut diamond passed down through generations of the groom’s family. The groom’s elegant gold wedding band was originally worn by the bride’s father and gifted to the couple.

The reception was held at the Keeneland Entertainment Center and Keene Barn, located within the grounds of the historic thoroughbred racetrack.  The cocktail hour held in the Keene Barn featured 9 foot tall willow trees decorated with white bulb lights, white draping blowing in the evening breeze and signature drinks – a Bourbon BowTie in honor of the groom and a Pink Cotton in honor of the bride. Hors-de-hourves selections included Kentucky Hot Browns and Pretzel Spoon Short Rib BBQ. Guests were asked to sign a Woodford Reserve Barrel Top in lieu of a guest book.

Each person that was invited to our wedding weekend has touched us, inspired us, helped shape us and become the individuals that we are today. We acquired real Kentucky thoroughbred horseshoes, and with the help of my parents and family friends, we scrubbed and cleaned them, painted them gold, sealed them and gifted them to each guest to take Kentucky luck home with them.

Bohemian, Beautiful & Bold are three adjectives that we would use to describe this stunner from Claire & Barrett Photography.  Todays WRK Feature Bride, Sierra, is hands down one of the most beautiful brides we’ve ever seen and the joy on her face is indescribable.  From her gown to their reception, not a detail was spared in this Apiary wedding. The florals were stunning and bold but far from over the top and the reception room was by the book perfect. We are thrilled to share these incredible images with you and have a feeling that the pinning is going to be out of control!!

When images from Melanie Mauer Photography hit our inbox, we immediately jump for joy.  Somehow she always lands the most incredible couples and we just know that her images will radiate love and warmth.  Emily + Chris were no exception and we are totally swooning over their Keeneland wedding.  Melody Rodgers with Refined Social Events just happened to be the brides bestie and made sure that all details were perfect. From the classic florals, to the elegant stationery suite, this wedding takes “swoon worthy” to a new level.

Love Story: You always think you’ll meet your husband through the traditional way of family/friends or while you’re in a social setting.  However, times have changed and that doesn’t happen as often.  I always laugh when someone asks where we met because I own it and am proud to say we met online. Chris on the other hand, would just say “out” – then he would look at me and smile knowing I was about to tell the truth.  As I tell my single friends in their mid-30s, “I give online dating hope!”  The first time I met Chris, I knew he was “the one”!  I sent my matrons of honor, Cortney and Melody, a text on our first date that I think this may be it.  Fast forward 11 months later, we were engaged.  Chris knew I didn’t want a public engagement so he proposed in our apartment in Arlington then had reservations in DC at our favorite restaurant, Fiola Mare.   That weekend we met my parents at the Greenbrier to celebrate then on to Puerto Rico to relax and take in all the excitement!  9 months later we married!

Favorite moment from the wedding day: This is a tough question because there were so many favorite parts of the day: hanging out all day with our siblings and best friends; our first look; walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Chris at the other end; having my nephews be a part of the day. But, I think the best part was the reception.  We were able to let loose and enjoying laughing and dancing with friends and family.  Thanks to my best friend, designer and planner, Melody Rodgers, I had a very thorough timeline that allowed us to greet all the guest but also enjoy ourselves especially on the dance floor.  I would not change a single thing about the evening.

What advice would you give brides to be currently planning their special day?  Have fun!  Take a step back and take it all in!  The best thing I did was have a very thorough timeline which we gave to each vendor.  In that timeline I built in that we would be done greeting our guest 2 hours before the reception ended so we could be on the dance floor and have fun with our friends and family.  That was the best decision I made because I remember every second of our day and felt I was able to have fun and enjoy myself with my husband.

Were there any special details apart of your decor, dress or ceremony? My wedding was beyond special because my matron of honor, Melody Rodgers of Refined Social Events, and Kyle Rogers of Canvas Event Furniture, designed and decorated my wedding and reception.  Melody had her work cut out for her because she knew what my spring/summer wedding would look like and I threw her a curve ball when I told her I was getting married in January.  Her design and decor were absolutely perfect and were spot on to fit my personality and style.  The only other thing I would add that I loved that we took the details on the back of my dress and incorporated them into the design of the cake.  Martine’s pastries design was absolutely gorgeous and was an exact replica of the back of my dress.

“A group of vendors in the Cincinnati, Ohio area decided to create a soft styled photoshoot showcasing the Kentucky countryside, located just 15 minutes outside downtown Cincinnati. The location was at Neltners Farm, a working farm which also hosts weddings and other special events. We decided to incorporate a bridesmaid into the shoot with the bride. Some of my favorite photos from a wedding is of the bride and her best girlfriends hanging out so we really wanted to translate this laid-back feeling into the shoot. The shoot took place on a hot (HOT) evening in late August. The colors of the florals reflects the time of year of the shoot – rich purple, cream, blush, yellow and a variety oranges was the basis of the color palate. We hope you enjoy these photos as much as we do” – Ben Elsass Photography

We’ve had brides ask our opinion before on do you do an engagement shoot… do you not.. and we say YES YES and YES!  Your engagement year is one of the happiest times of your lives and brides and their grooms tend to have a special spark in their eyes that is reserved for that year and that year only.  There are many different “eye sparkles”, but that one…. it’s honestly priceless and one you most definitely want to capture on film.  Melissa G Photography shot these two in all their glory and did a fantastic job capturing that special sparkle. We can hardly wait to share them with you!!!!

Today’s wedding includes some of our serious love crushes and it’s obvious why. It’s absolute perfection.  Eyelet linen linens?? Mini lemon trees? Photos that seriously take your breath away?? Let’s be real here for a second. Have you ever seen so much perfection encompassed in one wedding??? We could gush for days. Melanie Mauer ( one of the greatest photographers ever ) did a mini interview with our stunning bride and we thought we would share some of her love advice, her incredibly romantic story and some words of wisdom. We hope this wedding kickstarts your weekend and helps with all of your 2017 wedding planning.

Love story & advice from the Bride herself:

Jeff and I met while working at a radio station. I was in my senior year of college for Broadcast Journalism and French and this happened to be my summer internship, while Jeff was working at the station leading all of the promotions interns. Unbeknownst to me, he started requesting me to work his events because of my “great work ethic” so we saw each other more and more. By the end of the summer we had become a couple!

Five years later, Jeff put a plan in motion to propose to me. He knew my love for France and anything French in general and decided there was no better way. Christmas 2013 he gave me a box full of everything French he could find: candies, books, and a little Paris journal inscribed, “Pick a date”. I jumped up and screamed, “ARE WE GOING TO FRANCE?!” It was absolutely perfect. When we went to Paris four months later in April, we were lucky enough to be there over Easter. Still sluggish from jet-lag, we decided we had to venture out to see a public Catholic service in Notre Dame. I had been there several times, but never inside, and never to a service like that before. It was spectacular! Once we were outside, I was back to being tired, slightly cranky, and ready to crawl back in bed. But Jeff had other plans. In the garden just outside of the cathedral next to the Seine, Jeff dropped onto one knee and proposed! I think I nodded because everything up to that was a blur. He likes to say that once wasn’t enough, I made him propose three times.. and it’s true! I wanted to make sure I remembered everything! The last and third time, back at our apartment, I made sure to say YES out loud!

Favorite moment of the wedding day:

It’s so hard to choose – When I was walking down the isle with my grandfather towards Jeff, a big beautiful blue butterfly swooped down in front of me and fluttered with me on my way down. Some people have told me they saw three surrounding me – which is incredibly symbolic to me. That day I was deeply missing my father, my aunt (his sister), and my grandmother (his mother) and this let me know they were there with me.  However, I will also never forget watching Jeff’s reaction when we saw me for the first time. He looked like he had seen an angel! It always makes me smile.

Advice to current brides:

To make sure to RELAX and take time to absorb everything and take it in. There comes a point in the process when there’s nothing else you can plan, control, or fix – you just have to give up and enjoy the truly special day.

Special details apart of your decor, dress or ceremony:

My mother sewed a piece of my father’s tie into my dress – specifically two small strips on either side of the zipper as if he were supporting me; that was very special.  For the decor, I knew I wanted to get married on a horse farm but wanted to incorporate a little bit of everything in our personalities. I wanted black and white striped elements and a croquembouche to remind us of Paris where we got engaged; but I also wanted lemons to be involved – bright yellow and vibrant colors. Living in Arizona, there are so many citrus trees and my favorite time of year is when people bring buckets of lemons to take and I stack them high in a large bowl on the kitchen counter!
