6 Simple Rules for an Extra Awesome Engagement Session by our very own Nathan Peel.
A couple weeks ago, we talked about why you should do an engagement session or not. Now you want to make it awesome, right? Over the years I have developed a little “rulebook” that I send to all of my couple’s on how to make their engagement session the best it can be. It goes something like this…
Rule #1: GO SHOPPING. There is something about new clothes that makes you feel extra awesome. Remember, these are your engagement pictures, the only ones you’ll ever have. So set aside some money in the budget to get a couple outfits that you look great in. What are you waiting for? I just gave you permission to go shopping!!!
Rule #2: Be yourself with a little extra pop. Shop in the style you normally shop but get something that you would have worn on one of those first dates you had (you know, when you were still trying to impress each other). Most girls do one outfit that is casual (jeans, sweater, etc.) and one really great dress. The basic idea is to just think intentionally about your clothes and what accessories look good with them. You have good fashion sense, just trust it.
Rule #3: Never underestimate the power of a great pair of shoes. I mean, really.
Rule #4: Do not match! It is important to pick outfits for the two of you that go well together but do not match. That means leave the matching airbrush t-shirts in the drawer. Find a color palette and work from it but make sure your tops do not match each other exactly.
Rule #5: Rock the hair & makeup. If it’s in the budget, this is the perfect time for a trial with your wedding hair and/or make-up artist. If not, head to your local makeup counter and have them give you a couple tips the week before…you’d be amazed at what people will do for someone about to be married, use it to your advantage!
Rule #6: Have fun! Remember, this is a date where a photographer happens to be tagging along. The more fun you have, the better the pictures will be.
You guys will be nervous about this experience, it’s hard to avoid. So the more confident you are in your appearance, the more confident you will appear on camera.
Remember, an engagement session is about capturing on camera who you are as a couple. Be yourself, pick locations that speak to who you are and wear clothing that reflects the best version of you. Everything else is up to your amazing photographer!
