There were a couple of things that were really important to me when I was deciding how to propose to Kelli. I knew I wanted it to be somewhere meaningful to us, a complete surprise and I knew I wanted our families there to celebrate with us. We are both very close to our families and it meant a lot to us and them to be involved, it really took the night to the next level. Given my family had to fly in from Miami, this took some planning well in advance of the actual proposal. Once I had found a date that worked for both families, I had to find a location that would be perfect fit for us and for keeping it a surprise. If I took her for a romantic walk in the park she would know that something was up and probably would’ve known what was coming. I decided that since we first met at a CrossFit gym when she came in for a free class, that would be the perfect place to because we go there all the time and she wouldn’t think anything of it. I decided to make up a story about auctioning off a membership to the gym at a charity BBQ one of my clients was throwing. I told her we had to go to the gym to pick up some shirts to actually give the highest bidder, little did she know I was going to propose.
I knew that I had to keep our parents being there a secret but also had to make it so they could actually meet for the first time before I actually proposed. I had planned for them to meet at dinner the night before and then again at breakfast so they could get in some family time before the big event. I also had to keep Kelli occupied while I set everything up at the gym. I lucked out that she wanted to go on a long run in the morning which gave me some time to prepare but then I had to get rid of her during the day without it being suspicious. I decided to send her for an afternoon at the spa because she had actually been traveling for work all week and it was the perfect excuse to keep her busy for a couple of hours. I had already arranged for a florist to deliver flowers to the gym. It was actually great, once I told them what I was trying to pull off they went out of their way to help me set up. Who doesn’t want to be a part of someone’s proposal? One of the biggest mistakes I made was not checking the calendar to see what else might be actually going on around the gym that day and it turns out it was the St. Patrick’s day parade which is one of the biggest events in Dallas. All the roads were blocked off and there was tons of people in the streets but again, told the cops I was proposing and no more problems. It took a couple hours to get everything set up at the gym, from rose petals and tea candles from the door to a table, the flowers, and help a photographer get situated so she could be hidden and capture the whole thing on film. This was a memory I wanted to have for the rest of my life and to this day, these are some of our most favorite pictures. Once I was done, I picked Kelli up and we went home to get ready for the “BBQ.”
All while getting ready, I kept the story going about what the BBQ was trying to raise money for and who people were that she would meet, just to keep her off balance. I had come this far to keeping it a secret, I didn’t want to blow it. I had made a plan with our parents to leave the hotel once I texted them that we were on the way to the gym so there was no chance we would run into them. At the gym there was a big bay door right next to where I was proposing and it made for the perfect way for our families to surprise Kelli. I told them that once we called to tell them the good news, instead of answering the phone, to pull up the door. I was a little nervous but it ended up working to perfection.
I wasn’t nervous the entire day, I had actually surprised myself at how calm I was. We left the house on the way up to the gym and I told her to wait in the car, this would only take a second. Once I got in the gym, I quickly made any finishing touches to the setup and was ready to go. Remember me telling you that it was St. Patrick’s day? Well there was a bar next door playing techno music so loud we could hear it. I decided to quick plug my phone in and turn on some Al Green, her favorite singer, and it drowned out the techno. I called her and asked her to come in and help me out and the rest is history.
After going to dinner at the same place where we went on our first date, the last surprise was having our friends meet us back at our apartment for champagne and cake. I had a cake made in the shape of a ring and gotten paper plates made with different pictures of us printed on them (hallmark.com – it was an awesome touch, thanks mom for the idea). That was the icing on the cake, we had all the people that are close to us there to help us celebrate the happiest night of our lives.
The day went off without a hitch. I started planning way in advance and had taken the extra steps necessary to make sure everything was set up and in place so the day wasn’t stressful. It helped me stay calm and helped me pull it off without her wondering if I was up to something. I accomplished all of my goals, it was at a place that was meaningful to our relationship, she was completely surprised and loved having our families there with us. I got flowers for both moms and sisters to thank them for coming all that way to celebrate with us. It is the little things that really made the day special. You don’t have to do anything over the top or grandiose, this is a moment about you and your fiancé, make it about you and her and everything will fall into place.
